In the recent edition of the ‘This is My Why’ podcast, the 68-year-old coach talked about his eventful life as he coached players who were set to become champions. Macci also talked about how he ended up on the path to becoming such a coach. He remembered watching the United Airlines Sunburn Cup in the 1980s, which was won by Martina Navratilova

While discussing the Cup, the commentators mentioned the Green Leaf Golf and Tennis Resort, where it was being held. The topic of constructing additional amenities came up, prompting Macci to reach out to the club for more information.

I received a call from the place and they mentioned that they are looking to hire an assistant director for tennis. They have a lot of resumes to go through and will make a decision in a week. They also mentioned that I could fly down at my own expense if I wanted to..” 

Initially, Macci was hesitant about the potential opportunity and pondered whether or not to pursue it. However, he ultimately decided to travel to Hanne, Florida to visit the Resort and meet with those in charge.

I had a meeting with the man and we chatted, played, and spent the entire weekend together. He kindly dropped me off at the airport on Sunday night and offered me the job, saying “If you want it, it’s yours.” Despite the lower pay, I took a few days to consider it and ultimately decided to go for it..”

His hard work paid off, leading Macci to a successful coaching career with a roster of many talented stars, bringing him endless recognition and success.
