“Danny Green reflects on the ‘wake-up call’ of being drafted by the Cavs and playing alongside Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James, noting that LeBron’s 40-inch vertical jump was particularly impressive when he first witnessed it.”

Danny Green, a top player for the Philadelphia 76ers, had a unique experience in the NBA. In his first year as a professional, he had the chance to play on the same team as LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal for the 2009-2010 Cleveland Cavaliers. It was a rare occasion, as they only played together for 53 games that season. While this fact alone is impressive, Green had the opportunity to actually live it in his debut year. Luckily for us, he recently shared his memories from playing alongside two superstar players.

Green, a three-time NBA champion, has been quite the journeyman throughout his 14-year career. He has played for a total of six teams. However, he can also be regarded as one of the most fortunate players in the league. He has achieved the feat of winning three championships with three different teams, including consecutive titles in 2019 and 2020. Most recently, he signed a one-year deal with the 76ers during the offseason.

Danny Green recalls his time playing with both LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal.

In the 2023-24 season, LeBron James participated in media day, marking his 21st year in the league. Despite his age, the Los Angeles Lakers still view him as their leader. While the excitement surrounding the superstar remains high, Danny Green shared his experience playing alongside him during his 7th season. He also had the opportunity to play with Shaquille O’Neal during the latter’s final season.

Shaquille O'Neal

On December 21st, in Phoenix, Arizona, Shaquille O’Neal (number 33) from the Cleveland Cavaliers made a free throw shot during the NBA game against the Phoenix Suns at the US Airways Center. The Cavaliers won with a score of 109-91. Please note that by downloading or using this photograph, the user is agreeing to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. On the latest episode of Run Your Race, Green discussed different aspects of his professional journey. One notable topic brought up by the hosts was his rookie season. Green expressed disappointment in being drafted at 46 by the Cavaliers, but also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play alongside two all-star players. He also recounted a significant moment when he practiced with Shaq and James, stating, “In the basketball world, there are many moments that make you wake up and realize things… When I first arrived, I didn’t expect to play, but then I was practicing with them.”

He described the entire experience during the training session. He elaborated, “During the first practice, I was amazed by how impressive Bron looked in real life, jumping 40 inches with one hand… I was taken aback.”

Lebron James reflects on the benefits of being 21 years old during his 21st Media Day and comments, “It’s a bit different getting out of bed.”

In contrast, Shaq had a relatively uneventful season, scoring an average of 12 points in 53 games. However, his son, Shareef O’Neal, may have the opportunity to play more games alongside James’ son, Bronny.

The impact and lasting influence of Shaq and James

Although Shaq and James only played together for one season, it is possible that their children could continue their legacy for a longer period of time. Bronny James, who is projected to enter the 2024 draft, may have a significant role in this. Shareef O’Neal is currently playing in the G-League and may also make it to the NBA in a few years. One similarity between these two young players is that they have both dealt with heart conditions in recent times.
