PD charging
You will require a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger to connect to your MacBook. PD chargers have the capacity to provide up to 240W of power, with the most commonly used ones meeting the standard laptop power needs of 30W, 45W, 65W, and 100W. All of the chargers we have tested are PD chargers and can also quickly charge an iPhone.
The latest PD version (3.1) has a maximum charging capacity of 140W, which is necessary for fast-charging a 16-inch MacBook Pro. However, it is important to note that only the MagSafe port is compatible with PD 3.1, meaning you must use Apple’s USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable instead of a regular USB-C cable in order to achieve the fast-charging speed. It is still possible to power the laptop using a USB-C or Thunderbolt cable, but the maximum power that can be delivered through those methods is limited to 100W.
Wattage
The most crucial factor to consider when selecting a laptop charger, disregarding safety, is the power output it can provide to your MacBook.
A laptop requires a specific amount of watts to operate at maximum capacity, such as when running multiple applications or utilizing graphics and video rendering. You can use a USB-C charger that is 96W or higher and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable or a USB-C charge cable to quickly charge your 14-inch MacBook Pro.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro allows for fast-charging using a 140W USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable. However, this is only possible because the Thunderbolt ports are limited to 100W PD 3.0. Currently, Apple, Anker, and Ugreen are the only companies offering a power adapter with the PD 3.1 standard, which can provide up to 240W of power output. Other USB chargers typically have a maximum output of 100W.
It is acceptable to use a power adapter with a higher wattage to charge a laptop. However, this will not result in faster charging unless specific fast-charge guidelines are followed. Ports
Prior to July 2022, the M2 MacBook Air was the only Apple MacBook model with a single charging port. However, with the increasing number of devices requiring charging, having multiple ports would be a more practical choice.
If your MacBook is running at maximum capacity, your charger may not have sufficient extra power to charge other devices. In order to charge your iPhone or AirPods while also powering your laptop, you may need to purchase a charger with a higher wattage that can allocate the excess power.
Apple has recently launched a 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter for its MacBook Air, which now allows for charging with two ports. However, due to the total power output of 35W, the charging speed may be slower when compared to using a single port.
Portability
Apple’s silicon-based power adapters are mostly larger than third-party chargers that are built using Gallium nitride (GaN) technology. GaN is a material that produces less heat—and less heat means components can be closer together. This means GaN chargers can be smaller than previously possible.
Several of the GaN chargers currently available on the market are compact enough to fit into a pocket, but keep in mind that you will still need to find a place to store the USB-C cable. While Apple may have been behind in adopting GaN technology, their newer power adapters are noticeably smaller compared to their previous versions.

Wall, desktop or strip
