Impressive array of viral, malware detection, and network tools
Simpler method for determining types of antiviral scans and desired coverage areas.
Affordable pricing options for monthly subscription levels.
The marketing and advertising tactics are subtly promoting the “Ultimate” subscription level, encouraging users to upgrade and access its extra tools.
Tools for removing viruses and malware could provide more comprehensive explanations of questionable files after they have been identified.
The package provides a solid set of tools for a reasonable cost, but could benefit from clarifying its subscription levels. Desired features like VPN, disk cleaning, and anti-tracking tools are available for a higher monthly fee or included in the “Ultimate” subscription level.

Despite Apple’s increased attention to security in recent years, such as more frequent updates for macOS when major vulnerabilities are discovered, there is still a need for effective antivirus software. Avast Premium Security for macOS (currently at version 15.74) does an impressive job in this regard, aiming to protect your Mac from viruses and malware, scanning network content, and rarely missing any potential threats.
The remaining features of the software package complement each other, with a focus on the Traffic Monitor and Network Inspector. The Traffic Monitor provides information on data usage and bandwidth allocation, while the Network Inspector scans the network for safety, identifies connected devices, and alerts you to new devices joining the network.
I was impressed by the Core Shields feature when I tested it on a fraudulent website that appeared through a unexpected text message. The message claimed that a package I didn’t order was lost and instructed me to click on a fake USPS website link to resolve the issue. Thanks to Avast’s Real Site feature, the site did not load and I was unable to access questionable software as the website was designed to do. This feature can prevent similar mistakes in the future, even when encountering suspicious text messages and links.
Earlier this year, we criticized the installation process of Avast Free Antivirus and Avast One Essential for being cumbersome. This remains the case for Avast Premium Security, although it does install quickly and run smoothly on macOS Sonoma without causing any noticeable slowdowns. However, users are still required to grant the program full hard disk access and permission to filter network content, which may result in a longer installation time than expected. Fortunately, the Avast Security Uninstaller application functions well and there have been some improvements since our last review.
If there are any major disagreements, it is related to marketing. Similar to its competitors, Avast has shifted to a subscription-based model. Its SecureLine VPN, Cleanup Premium, and AntiTrack privacy tools can be subscribed to individually or as part of the pricier Avast Ultimate subscription tier.
One change I would recommend for quarantined files is for Avast Premium Security to display the virus definitions and provide a description of the potential impact on user data and privacy. This would increase user awareness and aid in the removal and prevention of future installations.
Apart from some minor details regarding virus definitions and subscription plans, Avast Premium Security is easy to install and runs smoothly. It provides helpful information about network security and identifies devices connected to your network. Additionally, it successfully prevented a web browser from accessing a potentially harmful smishing site. These are all beneficial features, and the cost is reasonable. The only downside is that the VPN and other tools are not included in the current price of $4.19/£3.33 per month, but overall, Avast Premium Security is a top-notch suite worth considering.
The package provides a strong set of tools at a reasonable cost, but could benefit from clearer distinctions between subscription levels. Desired features like VPN, disk cleanup, and anti-tracking tools come at a higher monthly fee or are only available with the “Ultimate” subscription. While the program has impressive capabilities like network scanning and preventing web browsers from downloading software from untrustworthy sites, it may feel like some of the most desired features (particularly for frequent travelers) require an additional payment.
