As predicted, the temperature sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro is limited.

  • The temperature sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro can now only measure temperatures of objects.

  • Google is currently working towards obtaining approval for human temperature detection, but there is no set timeline for when this will be achieved.

  • There were no other scenarios given for utilizing this sensor.

The Pixel 8 Pro has been officially released, providing all the information about the phone, including the enigmatic sensor on the back. As predicted by initial rumors, it is a temperature sensor with limited and possibly even fewer practical applications than expected.

Currently, Google is solely emphasizing the sensor’s ability to measure “object temperature”. (The presentation we received only mentioned being able to measure the temperature of beverages and water, not solid materials, which is quite limiting.) When we inquired about potential practical uses, we were informed that it can be used to measure the temperature of objects such as a cup of coffee or the insulation around windows in a home. However, the company appeared just as uncertain as us about its real-world applications.
