The function of this unfamiliar button remains a mystery, but its name implies a connection to photography.
The recent release of the iPhone 15 series may be over, but that doesn’t mean the end of iPhone rumors. There have been numerous rumors circulating about the 2024 iPhone series, and a new one has just been added to the mix.
According to MacRumors, the upcoming Apple iPhone 16 series may include a new button. This button would be in addition to the existing buttons on the rim, potentially bringing the total number of buttons to five: two for volume, one for power, one for the Action Button, and the new button.
Per an individual familiar with the matter who spoke to MacRumors, the recently introduced button is unofficially known as the “Capture Button.” If implemented, this button would be located on the right side of the phone, just below the power button. It is part of a confidential in-house initiative called “Project Nova.”
Apart from the button’s internal connections and position, there is not much information available about it. However, the developers have labeled it as a “Capture Button,” indicating that it may be related to taking photos. This is similar to Sony Xperia phones, which have a designated button for taking pictures that is conveniently located below the power button on the right side of the phone.
We have information about the new button featured on the Apple iPhone 16 series. It is capacitive, meaning it does not require physical pressing. Instead, internal sensors measure the pressure applied when pressing on it. The phone will provide a haptic response to confirm that your press has been registered.
Surprisingly, in 2023 there were numerous speculations that the iPhone 15 lineup would exclusively feature capacitive buttons under “Project Bongo.” However, this did not materialize as all buttons, including the new Action Button, on the iPhone 15 series remain mechanical. According to a source from MacRumors, Apple is reportedly developing a capacitive Action Button for the iPhone 16 series under “Project Atlas.”
As the launch of the iPhone 16 is still a year away, it is premature to determine if the new iPhones will include this button. The smartphones are currently in the development stage and there are various factors that could potentially change Apple’s plans. However, it appears that the company is placing a significant emphasis on buttons in their recent developments.
