AirPods and iOS 17: All the information you need to know.
Macworld
During the month of June, Apple announced three additional functions for the second-generation AirPods Pro, as well as enhancements to enhance the overall performance of all AirPods. These features underwent a testing phase that began at Apple’s WWDC event, but they have since been made accessible to the general public as a firmware update. Let’s take a look at the newly added features and improvements.
New AirPods features in iOS 17
Adaptive Audio
This is a newly introduced listening option that combines elements of Transparency mode and Active Noise Cancellation. It effectively filters out disruptive sounds like leaf blowers, but also lets in other sounds like passing cars. Adaptive Audio is particularly useful in situations where you want to fully immerse yourself in your listening without compromising safety.
This is suitable for use with second generation AirPods Pro.
Conversation Awareness
When you are wearing AirPods and someone speaks to you, Conversation Awareness can be useful. It can identify human speech and decrease the volume of your audio, while also amplifying the voices in front of you and minimizing background sounds.
Works with: Second-generation AirPods Pro
Personalized Volume
Do you ever find yourself frequently changing the sound settings? Personalized Volume utilizes machine learning to analyze your surroundings and listening habits, resulting in the AirPods automatically adjusting and optimizing the audio.
2nd-gen AirPods Pro
Automatic Switching
Apple has improved this current feature to enhance its speed and reliability when transitioning between devices, such as from your iPhone to your Mac.
Works with: Any version of AirPods

This product is suitable for use with the 3rd generation AirPods, 1st and 2nd generation AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.
Instructions for updating AirPods to the latest iOS 17 version.
New functionalities and enhancements are incorporated into the AirPods through a firmware update at no cost. Yet, individuals are unable to initiate the installation process themselves. It is automatically installed, but certain criteria must be met for it to take place:
-
The AirPods require an iPhone or iPad with an active internet connection to be in close proximity.
-
The charging case is required for the earbuds to be used.
-
The charging case must be connected to a power source.
To determine if the firmware has been updated, you can verify the firmware version. Here’s how:
-
Open the Settings application and select Bluetooth from the options.
-
Navigate to the My Devices tab and locate your AirPods. Click on the small “i” icon.
-
A new window will display the information of your AirPods. In the About section, check the number indicated in the Version section.
