Where your horizon expands every day.

Unfortunately, Nintendo has provided a discouraging announcement regarding the online services for the 3DS and Wii U consoles.

The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U are two gaming systems from the same era. They were released around the same time and were considered groundbreaking at the time. Their standout feature was their online capabilities.

Previously, Nintendo 3Ds and Wii U provided seamless online connectivity for players to engage in online gameplay, unlike their older versions. Popular games such as Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. were greatly enjoyed through this feature. However, Nintendo has recently declared the discontinuation of online connectivity for these consoles.

Nintendo has announced a scheduled date for the discontinuation of online services for their 3DS and Wii U consoles.

It is not uncommon for gaming console companies to discontinue online services for their older models. Sony recently did this for the PS Vita and PSP by shutting down their online stores. Nintendo has announced that they will also be discontinuing online services for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in early April 2024.

In 2012, the Wii U was released to a mixed reception from fans and critics. The console left Nintendo fans feeling perplexed as they struggled to understand its purpose and how it differed from its predecessor, the Wii. The mandatory integration of the gamepad in every game also made it difficult for Nintendo to sell the console.

However, the Nintendo 3DS proved to be an enormous triumph. This handheld device boasted impressive power for its category and could display 3D graphics without the need for glasses. Its popularity skyrocketed, prompting Nintendo to release a plethora of exceptional games to support it.

A Youtuber recently purchased the complete lineup of Nintendo’s home consoles, spanning from NES to Switch.

Although there is uncertainty surrounding the current number of Wii U players, it would be difficult to part ways with online services for the 3DS. The console is still highly regarded and boasts many games that truly excel when played online.

Will these consoles become obsolete if their online connectivity is removed?

The consoles are still usable and fans can play all games on them, but without internet access. Online connectivity is most useful for playing multiplayer games. Some examples include Street Fighter 3D, Tekken 3D, Mario Kart 7, and Super Smash Bros. for 3D, which use online connectivity for multiplayer modes.

A positive aspect is that individuals who have bought games from 3Ds or the Nintendo Wii U eShop will still have access to download those games, despite the discontinuation of online service. Therefore, there is still hope; just remove any intentions of playing wholesome Zelda co-op after April 2024.
