Carlos Alcaraz Emerges as the Perfect Counter for Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s Absence as Former American Professional Dishes Out a Stirring Verdict for Men’s Tennis

Novak Djokovic is the sole active member of the ‘Big 3’ in the present time. After Roger Federer retired from tennis, the community turned to Rafael Nadal as their new star. However, Nadal was out of the game due to an injury. As a result, another Spanish player filled the gap left by Federer and Nadal. But how long will fans continue to mourn the absence of Fedal? Is it time to accept the departure of this iconic tennis duo? A former American player and ESPN analyst analyzed the current state of men’s tennis and provided answers to these questions.

Reworded: Carlos Alcaraz prevented the Serbian player from achieving his 24th Grand Slam victory at the Wimbledon Championships, ultimately ending his chances of completing the Calendar Slam. As a result, the former Top-20 ranked player, along with the daughter of NBA legend Julius Erving, surprised fans of Federer and Nadal by highlighting Alcaraz as the up-and-coming talent to watch.

Following the retirement of the Swiss Maestro and the announcement of Rafael Nadal’s impending retirement, fans are struggling to adapt to this new chapter in tennis. The sudden shift in generations is a tough pill to swallow for those who have been avidly watching Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for more than 20 years. Even when Novak Djokovic first began his professional career, fans had a hard time accepting him as part of the tennis elite. It’s understandable that they are still attached to the ‘Fedal’ era.

Former professional tennis player Alexandra Stevenson shared her thoughts on the significance of recognizing the current generation in a recent episode of the Spotify podcast “Match Point Canada”. Dr. J’s daughter expressed her belief that tennis extends beyond the popular players such as Federer, Nadal, and Murray. Using Wimbledon and the US Open as examples, she stated, “I believe that this year’s Wimbledon and US Open have shown that there are other players to watch in men’s tennis besides Roger, Rafa, and Andy Murray. While Andy Murray is still playing and remains exciting to watch, there is more to the sport than just those three players.”

Discussing this year’s US Open, Stevenson disclosed the significant impact the tournament had on evaluating ATP players. She stated, “In my opinion, Alcaraz is spearheading the movement. He has truly revitalized the men’s game since many were disappointed with the absence of Roger and Rafa.”

However, Murray has disclosed in multiple press conferences and interviews after matches that he has a specific date in mind for his retirement. This would leave only Djokovic as the sole remaining player from their time, and the Serbian player has stated that he has no intentions of considering retirement, given his impressive achievements. While acknowledging Djokovic as the dominant force in men’s tennis, the former World No. 18 also shared her top picks in the sport.

A former top-ranked athlete cautions to be wary of the top six players.

The 42-year-old disclosed six blooming ATP professionals with significant chances to win Grand Slams. Without hesitation, she included Djokovic and Alcaraz and selected the other 4, among which only one player owns a Slam. Stevenson analyzed that Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev have a vast potential to clinch the Slam glory.

Medvedev has achieved one significant championship, while Rublev has only reached eight quarter-finals in Grand Slam tournaments so far. The American player also chose fellow Americans Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe as up-and-coming ATP champions. Shelton has been performing well since his semi-final appearance at the US Open and impressive showing at the Laver Cup.

Tiafoe, however, is facing challenges in maintaining a steady performance. Despite this, he has accomplished some notable feats. The talented player made it to the semi-finals of the 2022 US Open after defeating Rafa in the fourth round. He also became the first African-American since Arthur Ashe to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam and achieve a Top-10 ranking. Share your top pick in the comments below!
