Recognizing Exceptional Reviewers for AGU’s 2022 Review Process

The blog Editors’ Vox is operated by the Publications Department of AGU.
Today, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Publications in Eos acknowledges a group of exceptional reviewers for their contributions in 2022, chosen by the journal editors.
Peer review is central to communicating and advancing science. While there have never been more ways to distribute ideas and research outputs, a robust peer review ensures that we maintain the highest integrity in our scientific discourse. The peer review process is organized by our journal editors, but every article decision relies on dedicated individuals who take time away from their own research to volunteer their time and expertise. The work of these reviewers ensures proper evaluation of thousands of articles each year. We are truly thankful for their efforts.
As the demand for scientific literature has expanded, the composition of papers has become more intricate, often involving multiple authors with a variety of techniques, data, simulations, and findings. This growth in complexity has also heightened the importance and responsibility of peer reviewing. The exceptional reviewers recognized here have conducted thorough evaluations, often through multiple revisions, that significantly enhanced the quality of the final published papers. Their contributions have elevated the standard of submissions received from all corners of the globe, offering valuable feedback that promotes better scientific dialogue in AGU’s publications and throughout scholarly publishing.
Several reviewers play an integral role in AGU journals.
Although we would like to give recognition to a few exceptional reviewers, we want to express our gratitude to all the AGU reviewers who have contributed greatly to maintaining the high standards and timely publication of AGU journals. We also extend a warm welcome to new and first-time reviewers who have joined our team of integrity stewards and provided valuable evaluations for authors. In 2022, AGU received a total of 17,000 submissions, slightly more than in 2021, and published 7,424 articles. The majority of submissions underwent multiple reviews, with a total of 18,462 reviewers completing 37,939 reviews in 2022.
In recent years, researchers, editors, and peer reviewers have experienced a tumultuous ride. The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a surge of submissions initially as individuals had more time to write due to a lack of new research being generated. However, submission rates have since declined from their peak in 2021 and have only slightly increased in 2022 as individuals focused on restarting their research programs. Despite a decrease in the number of articles to review, the challenges of maintaining the peer review system have reached an all-time high. In both Europe and the United States, volunteer reviewers are struggling to keep up with the number of invitations they receive. While China has become the leading country in terms of research output, our journals face difficulties in inviting a proportionate number of Chinese reviewers, despite the presence of a large population of highly qualified and willing volunteers. Additionally, early career researchers may see some individuals complaining about being overwhelmed with invitations, while others may wonder why they do not receive any invitations at all.
Despite the difficulties, every AGU journal made efforts to reduce the time between submitting and receiving the initial decision and publishing, or maintained high standards in the field. Some AGU journals typically provide initial decisions within 1 month of submission, while most others do so within 2 months. Reviewers played a significant role in this progress.
The journal’s editorials, some of which have been published and others that are yet to come, convey our gratitude and include lists of acknowledgments. We are grateful for the significant role that reviewers play in enhancing our scientific research and its impact on society.
Additional Thanks
Furthermore, we are striving to showcase the important contributions of reviewers through events, even if they have to be held virtually, such as at AGU’s Annual Meeting and other conferences.
In addition, every reviewer will receive a reduced price on AGU and Wiley publications. We are committed to collaborating with the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) network in order to officially acknowledge the contributions of reviewers and give them proper credit. As of June 6, 2023, we have a total of 91,000 ORCIDs, an increase from 71,700 two years ago.
Getting Your Feedback
Your input is important to us. We welcome your suggestions on how we can better acknowledge your contributions, enhance your experience, and amplify your impact on the field of science. Please feel free to send your feedback to [email protected]. We are eager to hear from you!
Once again: Thanks!
